Discharge Inks
Discharge Inks work by mixing color pigment with a “bleaching agent”. When printed on the garment it actually bleaches the fabric color, exposing the natural color of the shirt fiber(usually a light tan color). This allows the color pigment to now be bright and visible, almost as if it was printed on a white fabric, the print is left soft to the touch. Like Water Base Inks, this process is very temperamental and far more challenging to achieve consistent, quality results. So do not be fooled if just any printer claims to be able to use discharge Inks effectively.

PRINTING ON DARK GARMENTS:
Dark garments preferably black, is the only time Discharge Inks should be used. Discharge prints should appear bright in color and have an extremely soft hand to the touch. Discharging color is not the only use for this ink. Discharge alone, without any color pigment will bleach the shirt, exposing the natural fiber colors. This can be incorporated into the design of the shirt, and it also can be used as an alternative to printing a “plastisol” white base on dark shirts.

When doing this a discharge base is laid down under areas requiring color, just like a “white base” is, then plastisol inks can be laid down on top to create the needed color in the design. Doing this rather than mixing the color pigment into the discharge can sometimes give greater color control, especially when printing the same design on multiple garment colors. It also reduces the heaviness of the print that can occur when printing large areas on dark garments.

PRINTING ON LIGHT GARMENTS:
Discharge inks are not used on Light and white garments. Since the print surface is already light, there is no need to bleach out the color. Water based inks should be used when printing on light and white garments, when trying to achieve a soft hand print.

Use It When:

  • Trying to achieve an extremely soft hand when printing on dark garments.
  • Printing over seams, zippers, collars, etc...
  • A white base is required, and you want to minimize ink build up, a discharge base is a great alternative.

BRANDS WE USE:
We use both Plastisol and water based discharge products. Depending on the effect, desired color, and garment colors to be used, will all be considered to determine the best product for the job. Our Water Based Discharge line is MATSUI COLOR. Our Plastisol Discharge line is Union Ink.
DISCLAIMERS:
Discharge printing creates a greater potential in “damaged” items in production, so compensation for this should be considered when using this process. Different garment dyes and manufacturers can greatly influence the final desired color, and if multiple brands or styles are used in a single production run, different ink colors may result.

Exact PMS matching is not guaranteed with this process, however we can get close, so PMS colors provided are for reference only.

Blue, Red, and Purple garments are very strong dyes, and we advise not to use for discharging. These garments can tend to change back. For example, if printing white discharge on Royal blue tees, the white area can potentially start to fade to a light blue color. Environment conditions and garment brand can greatly influence the final color. Do to the limited shelf life of Discharge Inks, we do not offer Discharge Samples for runs less than 36 prints. If pre-production samples are required before production, plastisol or water based inks will be used.
